GREENVILLE --His squad noticeably weary and sluggish from a long stretch of two daily practice sessions, Furman head coach Bobby Johnson cut back on the Paladins' work schedule on Tuesday in preparation for more full scale work on Wednesday.
"We cut it down a bit today because we had gotten a little sluggish and the players were losing their legs a bit," said Johnson following Tuesday afternoon's session practice. "We want them to be as fresh as possible for tomorrow (Wednesday) when we do some more live work. We need that because there are some things you just can't simulate in practice."
Tuesday marked the return of a pair of fullbacks, sophomores Adam Sanders and Derek Russell, who had been limited in the pre-season with hamstring strains.
"It was good to get Adam and Derek back. Their return should help us get a little bit more done. For a while there (freshman) Louis Ivory was our only healthy fullback because Ryan Pressnell has a broken finger," Johnson added.
The Paladins conclude twice daily practice sessions on Friday and will
have Saturday and Sunday off before returning for game week preparations
for the season opener against Clemson on Sept. 5.
