Furman Completes First Full Squad Practices; Johnson Pleased With Senior Leadership

GREENVILLE -- Furman University head football coach Bobby Johnson came away from Monday's first full squad practice sessions pleased with the team's efforts, and in particular the leadership of the Paladin veterans.

"Our senior leadership was strong today, and that helped set the tone for really good practices," Johnson said following the two and a half hour afternoon session in shorts and shoulder pads. "They (the seniors) are intent on getting things done out there, and when you get that kind of leadership, it sets the standard for the younger players."

The 90 players taking part in Furman's pre-season drills worked on installing the squad's offensive and defensive schemes.

"We're trying to cover as much as we can as fast as we can. Our guys are picking it up well, and their intensity has been good," Johnson added.

Furman will continue its two-a-day practices in shorts and shoulder pads through Wednesday before going to full pads on Thursday. The Paladins are scheduled to scrimmage in Paladin Stadium on Saturday as part of Fan Day, with the approximate two-hour scrimmage starting at 2:15 p.m. following a player autograph session at 1:30 p.m. Saturday's scrimmage and all Furman practices are open to the public.
