Marq Cerqua Dismissed From Furman Football Team

GREENVILLE -- Furman University head football coach Bobby Johnson announced today that fullback Marq Cerqua has been permanently dismissed from the football program for violation of team rules.

Cerqua, a sophomore from Six Mile, S.C., started in Furman's first six games this year and rushed for 242 yards and four touchdowns prior to his dismissal. He also was Furman's kickoff returns leader, averaging 29.2 yards on 12 returns through eight games.

Last year Cerqua rushed for 515 yards and six touchdowns and was named Furman's Freshman-of-the-Year despite being suspended for one game for violating team rules.

Head coach Bobby Johnson refused comment on the dismissal, stating only that Cerqua's role of backup fullback would be filled by redshirt freshman Adam Sanders.

Furman takes on Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga., on Saturday, Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
