WPEK-FM 98.1 To Carry Furman Football, Basketball Broadcasts

GREENVILLE -- Furman University vice-president for intercollegiate athletics Dr. John Block announced today that the school had reached an agreement with 100,000-watt radio station WPEK-FM to broadcast the Paladins' football and men's basketball games this year.

"We are delighted to enter into this relationship with WPEK," Block said Thursday afternoon. "In addition to demonstrating our commitment to provide a quality radio signal to our fans, this agreement also underscores the growing interest in our athletics program in the Upstate."

The agreement, which covers the 1997-98 school year, includes all 11 regular season football games and potential playoff contests, plus the Paladins' basketball schedule, with "only one or two basketball games possibly being pre-empted due to other programming commitments," according to Block.

"We are proud to be associated with such a quality school as Furman University," said WPEK vice-president and general manager David Alpert. "Our commitment to sports programming is only enhanced by this agreement, and the fact that Furman is located in Greenville shows our efforts to highlight area programs."

In addition to having its games broadcast over WPEK-FM, Furman football and basketball contests will also be carried over Greenville radio station WPCI-AM (1490) for the second consecutive year.
