ASU DOWNS FURMAN 73-52 IN TIMMONS


GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furmanšs Lady Paladin basketball team lost at home for just the second time this season, in a 73-52 battle against Appalachian State University Monday night in Southern Conference action.

After playing to an even 29-29 tie in the first period, the Lady Paladins went the first 7:46 of the second half without making a field goal and trailed 46-31 with 12:28 to go. Appalachian State continued its defensive tenacity and held the Lady Paladins to 36.8% shooting in the second period en route to recording Furmanšs worst loss in the two year history of Timmons Arena.

The Mountaineers led for all but the first 24 seconds of the second period and ended the game with a 21 point decision, the largest margin of the night. Senior forward Beth Schoolfield scored 21 on the night and was the only Mountaineer in double digits, while freshman Lucia Borcinova added nine and three ASU players tallied eight. Appalachian State shot 60.7% from the field in the second period and outrebounded Furman 37-25 on the night.

Furman was led by junior Jackie Smith, who tallied 14 points with three field goals and eight-for-eight shooting from the line, but was held to just two points in the first period by ASU defensive stopper Tiffany Chappell. Senior Heidi White added 13 points and dished off three assists, while Tara Charles led the team with four assists and five steals on the night.

With the loss, Furman falls to 12-11 overall and 9-6 in the Southern Conference, while Appalachian State improves to 10-13 overall and 6-9 in league play. The Lady Paladins will host Davidson at 3 p.m. Saturday in Timmons Arena.
