LADY PALADINS SPOIL C OF C'S CONFERENCE DEBUT
WHITE'S SCORING STREAK SNAPPED

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Though a 26-game double-digit scoring streak by Heidi White was broken Tuesday night in Furman's home opener against College of Charleston, the Lady Paladins' four-game losing streak snapped with a 73-55 victory over the Cougars in C of C's inaugural Southern Conference game.

Before scoring five points on Tuesday night, White, a senior guard on the Lady Paladin team, was last held to single digits on December 7, 1997, against the University of North Carolina. A zero-for-six showing from the field in the first half put the streak in jeopardy, as did White's early second-period foul trouble. White went two-for-two with a three-pointer in the second half, but committed her fourth foul near the nine minute mark and saw limited action after that.

"I am just glad we won," said White afterward. "A 26-game streak is great, but winning is what really counts."

Almost every member of the Lady Paladin team contributed to Furman's 73 point total. Furman's two leading scorers, White and junior Jackie Smith, were each held to single-digit scoring, but sophomore Amy King led the team with 12 points on the night, while Kena Hodges and Tara Charles each added 11, Smith tallied nine, and freshman Mary Brock added eight. At the final buzzer every Lady Paladin team member, with the exception of freshman Elizabeth Fleming, had amassed at least two points.

Senior Missy Peterson led the Cougars on the night with a season-high 25 points on 12-of-12 shooting from the free throw line and a five-for-12 night from the field. Peterson was the only College of Charleston player to reach double-digits, while Amanda Miller and Jodie Olofson shared rebounding honors with five each.

With the win, the Lady Paladins improved to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Conference, while College of Charleston dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in their first season of league play.

The Lady Paladins are in action again on Saturday, December 5, with a 3 p.m. game against East Tennessee State in Timmons Arena. The Cougars will host Western Carolina Monday, December 7, at 7 p.m.
