1999-2000 Lady Paladin Schedule Date Opponent Result (Greenville, SC)
Last Time Out... In Furman's last non-conference game of the regular season, the Lady Paladins trounced cross-state rival Winthrop 82-43. Four Lady Paladins scored in double-digits, including Jackie Smith, who led the team with 18 points and claimed her 41st career double-double when she added 11 rebounds. Ashley Shipp added a career-high 14 points, Kena Hodges scored 13, and Tara Charles totaled 11. The Lady Paladins shot a season-high 50.8% from the field.
Last Time Against UNCG... The Furman offense managed 65 points, despite shooting just 36%, but was unable to stop the Spartans of Greensboro, who scored 80 to hand Furman its first of four consecutive SoCon losses on Feb. 6, 1999. Melinda Goodson led the UNCG charge with 15 points, while ChoRhonda Gwaltney added 14 and Samika Foster totaled 13. The Lady Paladins were paced by Jackie Smith's 18 points and 14 rebounds. The Lady Paladins and the Spartans were tied for first in the Southern Conference entering the Feb. 6 game.
Player of the Week... Furman senior Jackie Smith was named Southern Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday, Jan. 4, after averaging 20.0 points, 12.3 rebounds, 1.7 steals, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game in the previous week's three competitions. Smith also earned her 40th career double-double and was named to the Dartmouth All-Tournament team in the previous week. It was Smith's ninth POW citation.
On the Tube... For the first time since Jan 2, 1999, (a 68-62 win over Western Carolina) the Lady Paladins will play on television. Furman's Jan. 8 game at UNC Greensboro has been moved to a noon starting time and will be broadcast by Fox Net Sports South.
Into Third Place... With 19 rebounds versus the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest, Jackie Smith not only tied her career high for rebounds in a game, but upped her career boards total to 801, which moved her into third place on the all-time list. Smith currently totals 860. Rhonda Chanson, who played from 1980-84, dropped into fourth with her 791 tally. If Smith reaches 1,000 rebounds in her career, she will join select company: only Natalie Cleckley (1,102) and Rushia Brown (1,023) have topped 1,000 career boards at Furman.
She's All That... Senior forward Jackie Smith (Woodbridge, Va.) entered the 1999-2000 season as the two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year. Smith averaged 20 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists a year ago, while shooting 51.0% from the field and 80.9% from the free throw line. Smith already holds the Furman record for free throws in a career (602) and is ranked sixth on the all-time blocks chart, with 80. In addition, Smith totals 1,597 career points entering today's game, and with 403 will become only the second woman in Furman history to score 2,000. Smith also totals 41 career double-doubles, including her 18-point, 11 rebound performance versus Winthrop. Only Rushia Brown, who currently plays for the Cleveland Rockers has more career double-doubles at Furman; Brown totaled 48.
SoCon Season: Furman's Dec. 4 loss to ETSU marked the first time since 1991-92 that Furman started the Southern Conference schedule with a loss. The good news is, in 1991-92, after a loss to Western Carolina to start the league schedule, Furman battled back to post an 8-2 conference record and win the regular season title.
Hitting Her Stride... Not only did Torrie Scott set a new career high with 10 rebounds in the Dec. 28 game versus UMass, Scott became the first woman other than Kena Hodges or Jackie Smith to lead the team in rebounding in any game this year. On Jan. 3, Scott set a new career high with 13 boards versus Western Carolina.
Charles in Charge... Junior Tara Charles set a season superlative and a career high in the Dec. 28 game versus UMass, claiming eight steals against the Minutewomen. Her previous career high of five was set on Feb. 8, 1999, versus Appalachian State. Charles has been on a tear lately, averaging 9.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 4.5 assists in the last four games.
Back to the Boards... In the Dec. 28 game versus UMass, Furman was outrebounded 48-38. That 10-point deficit is the highest of the year for the Lady Paladins who outrebound their opponents by an average of 4.4 boards per game.
Topping the League... As of Jan. 3, Furman guard/forward Jackie Smith leads the Southern Conference in scoring (19.2 ppg) and rebounding (11.6 rpg). In addition, she is first in offensive rebounds (5.27), second in defensive rebounds (6.27), third in free throw percentage (.800) and eighth in blocked shots (0.73 bpg). She also leads the league in double-doubles, with eight so far this season.
Take That... Furman currently ranks first in the Southern Conference in blocked shots per game, with a 4.50 average. Wofford is a distant second with a 2.57 per game mark. In Furman's Dec. 20 game versus Wofford, junior center Leitra Young managed four rejections.
More on the League... In addition to ranking first in blocks in the Southern Conference, the Lady Paladins also lead the league in rebounding offense (43.7) and three-point defense (.274). Furman is also third in scoring (67.3), scoring margin (+0.5), scoring defense (66.8) and field goal percentage defense (.403). The Lady Paladins are also fourth in free throw percentage with a .684 mark.
Double Jeopardy... Junior College transfer Torrie Scott currently leads the Lady Paladin team in assists, with 49 overall and a 4.1 per game average, and is second in steals, with 32 and a 2.6 per game mark. She is also ranked seventh in the Southern Conference in steals, fourth in assists, and 18th in rebounding.
Strong on the Boards... Despite a few early losses, the Lady Paladins have held their own on the boards so far this season. Furman was outrebounded 45-41 by Miami, and 48-38 by UMass, but topped Florida Atlantic 51-41, Coastal Carolina 38-30, Clemson 44-38, Wake Forest 52-34, Wofford 45-36, Dartmouth 46-44, and

Winthrop 44-32. The Lady Paladins are ranked first in the league in rebounding offense (43.7) and second in rebounding margin (+5.6).
Doing it At the Line...While Jackie Smith is still more than 400 field goals from Rushia Brown's all-time record of 908, Smith is closing in on the 2,000 point mark which has only been broken by Brown. How? At the line. Of her 1,597 career points, Smith has scored 602 of them at the free throw line, while Rushia Brown scored only 353 points off free throws in her entire career. Smith already holds Furman's career free throws mark.
Off the Block... Three current Lady Paladin team members are ranked on Furman's all-time blocks list. Jackie Smith is fourth with 80, Kena Hodges is fifth, with 62, and Leitra Young is sixth, with 56. The all-time record of 193 is held by Rushia Brown. Furman has tallied three or more blocks in nine of 11 games this season, including a season-high eight versus Coastal Carolina.
The Injury Report... Furman has had more than its fair share of injuries early this season. Point guard Torrie Scott is hampered by a deep bruise on her lower back and a nagging knee injury. In addition, freshman guard Wendy Jones underwent surgery to repair her left ACL on Dec. 17, and Althea Bufford is out four to six weeks with a stress fracture in her leg and foot. Leitra Young is doubtful for today's game after sustaining a concussion in practice last week.
Best of the Best... The Southern Conference coaches gave Furman senior Jackie Smith a wholehearted pat on the back in the preseason voting. In addition to being named preseason Player of the Year, Smith was named Best Offensive Player, Best Rebounder, Best All-Around Player, Best Clutch Player, and Best Pro Prospect.
Coaches' Picks... The University of North Carolina Greensboro was picked by a vote of league coaches to repeat as Southern Conference Champions in 2000, while the Lady Paladins were selected third. The complete poll follows: 1) UNCG (8 First Place Votes) 98 2) East Tennessee State (2) 87 3) Furman 79 4) Chattanooga 56 5) Georgia Southern 55 T6) Appalachian State 52 T6) Davidson 52 8) Western Carolina 30 9) Wofford 22 10) College of Charleston 19
All-America... With two Player of the Year plaques and 1,597 points to her credit, senior Jackie Smith is putting up All-America type numbers. In addition, the 6-1 forward has proven she can post with the best of the best after scoring 30 or more points in seven games so far in her career, including matchups with North Carolina, Middle Tennesssee State, and Wake Forest.
Record... Last season, senior Jackie Smith tied the school record for points in a game, with 37 versus Middle Tennesssee State. In addition, she tallied 22 rebounds in Furman's first exhibition game this year, just one shy of the Furman record of 23, set in 1991 by Natalie Cleckley. Hopefully, she is saving the actual record-breaking numbers for games that count. Smith already holds the school record for free throws in a season (207) and career (602).
Signees... The Lady Paladins landed four signees during the recent early signing period: Deshara Shealey, 5-11, Guard, Greenbay, Va. (Prince Edward High) Kim Lawrence, 6-0, Forward, Atlanta, Ga. (Woodward Academy) Laney Harris, 6-0, Guard, Loganville, Ga. (Loganville) Alison Thomason, 5-10, Forward, Pickens, S.C. (Pickens)
