Last Time: In their last game, the Lady Paladins outgunned Florida Atlantic 87-70 to move to 1-1 on the season. Jackie Smith had her first double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Torrie Scott added 17 points and Ashley Shipp totaled 10. Freshman Orion Wake was second on the team with eight rebounds. Furman shot 39.2% from the field and 33.3% from three point range while connecting on 28-of-38 for a .737 showing at the free throw line. Scott was also Furman's leading playmaker, with six assists, and totaled four steals.
Furman versus Coastal: The last time Furman and Coastal battled it out was 1993, when the Lady Paladins took an 86-45 decision at home. The last game in Conway was a 92-81 Furman win in 1992. Furman and Coastal played every season from 1986-1993 before discontinuing the in-state rivalry.
Furman in 1999-2000: The 1999-2000 season is the 31st year of women's basketball at Furman. The Lady Paladins have compiled a 314-362 record in that time, with current head coach Sherry Carter posting a 245-222 mark over the last 17 years. Furman's only trip to the NCAA Tournament was 1995, when the Lady Paladins dropped a first-round, 90-52 decision, to Louisiana Tech.
Quadruple Threat: Junior College transfer Torrie Scott has shown off a mulifaceted game early in the season. Scott currently lead the Furman team in three-point percentage (.250), free throw percentage (.833), assists (8), and steals (6). The point guard out of Northeast Nebraska Community College is also second in points per game, with a 12.0 mark.
Strong on the Boards: Furman lives and dies by the rebound, but is off to a pretty good start on the season. The Lady Paladins have claimed five more offensive rebounds than their opponents and one more defensive board. In fact, the Lady Paladins outrebounded Florida Atlantic 51-41 in the 17-point Furman victory.
Into Fourth Place: Furman senior Jackie Smith moved into fourth place on Furman's all-time rebounds list with eight versus Miami. Smith enters today's game with 741 all-time. Former Lady Paladin Tonya Bristow (94-98) has dropped into fifth with her 725 tally. Smith needs 51 more to move into third (Rhonda Chanson - 791).

"Hodging" Your Bets: Kena Hodges may have proven she is a sure thing this season, after claiming a double-double in Furman's season-opening 42-point loss. Hodges was seven-of-12 from the field and two-for-two from the free throw line to score 16, and claimed six offensive and five defensive rebounds en route to an 11-board total. Hodges followed up her performance with five points and six rebounds in 16 minutes of play versus FAU.
The Last Time... Prior to the Nov. 23 game at Florida Atlantic, the last time Furman scored 87 points in a game was Dec. 17, 1997, when Furman defeated East Tennessee State 89-85 in Johnson City, Tenn. Furman faces the ETSU Bucs on Sat., Dec. 4, on the Bucs' home court.
Going Back... Furman's 42-point loss to Miami was the Lady Paladins worst defeat since the 1997-98 season opener, when the University of Alabama topped the Lady Paladins 91-41 in the season opener as a part of the Preseason NIT.
Doing it At the Line...While Jackie Smith is still more than 400 field goals from Rushia Brown's all-time record of 908, Smith is closing in on the 2,000 point mark which has only been broken by Brown. How? At the line. Of her 1,400 career points, Smith has scored 528 of them at the free throw line, while Rushia Brown scored on 353 points off free throws in her entire career.
Team Makeup: Though Furman graduated just one player off last year's 13-14 squad, the Lady Paladins have a new look this year thanks to a pair of junior college transfers and four freshmen. JuCo guards Torrie Scott (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Ashley Shipp (Greensboro, N.C.) are joined by freshmen Wendy Jones (Irmo, S.C.), Catherine Crutchfield (Concord, N.C.), Lauren Moran (Atlanta, Ga.), and Orion Wake (Woodbridge, Va.) in giving the team a whole new look this season.
She's All That: Senior forward Jackie Smith (Woodbridge, Va.) entered the 1999-2000 season as the two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year. Smith averaged 20 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists a year ago, while shooting 51.0% from the field and 80.9% from the free throw line. Smith already holds the Furman record for free throws in a career (528) and is ranked sixth on the all-time blocks chart, with 69. In addition, Smith totals 1,400 career points entering today's game, and with 600 will become only the second woman in Furman history to score 2,000. Smith also totals 33 career double-doubles, including the 20-points and 11 rebounds she total versus Florida Atlantic.
Speaking of 2,000: If Jackie Smith scores 600 more points this season she will join Rushia Brown as the only women in Furman history to score 2000 points in their careers. Brown is currently a member of the WNBA's Cleveland Rockers, and spends the winters playing professionally in Europe.
Exhibition Lowdown: Furman dropped a 77-70 exhibition game to Team Champion of Atlanta on Nov. 7, before defeating the Asheville Rage 90-76 on Nov. 16. Jackie Smith scored 22 points and claimed 22 rebounds in the first game, before sitting out the second with a concussion sustained in practice. Junior transfer Ashley Shipp and freshman Wendy Jones saw their first action in the second game, scoring two and 10, repsectively. Freshman Orion Wake had a double-double versus the Rage - she was 8 for 13 from the field for 16 points, and she claimed 12 boards.

Shooting Stars: After posting a 39.7 shooting percentage from the field in the game versus Team Champion, the Lady Paladins fired 46.6% in the exhibition versus the Asheville Rage. In addition, Furman shot a very respectable 58.1% in the second half of the Rage game.
Off the Block: Three current Lady Paladin team members are ranked on Furman's all-time blocks list. Jackie Smith is fourth with 69, Kena Hodges is fifth, with 52, and Leitra Young is 10th, with 47. The all-time record of 193 is held by Rushia Brown.
Best of the Best: The Southern Conference coaches gave Furman senior Jackie Smith a wholehearted pat on the back in the preseason voting. In addition to being named preseason Player of the Year, Smith was named Best Offensive Player, Best Rebounder, Best All-Around Player, Best Clutch Player, and Best Pro Prospect.
Coaches' Picks: The University of North Carolina Greensboro was picked by a vote of league coaches to repeat as Southern Conference Champions in 2000, while the Lady Paladins were selected third. The complete poll follows:
1) UNCG (8 First Place Votes) 98 2) East Tennessee State (2) 87 3) Furman 79 4) Chattanooga 56 5) Georgia Southern 55 T6) Appalachian State 52 T6) Davidson 52 8) Western Carolina 30 9) Wofford 22 10) College of Charleston 19
All-America: With two Player of the Year plaques and 1,400 points to her credit, senior Jackie Smith is putting up All-America type numbers. In addition, the 6-1 forward has proven she can post with the best of the best after scoring 30 or more points in seven games so far in her career, including matchups with North Carolina, Middle Tennesssee State, and Wake Forest.
Record: Last season, senior Jackie Smith tied the school record for points in a game, with 37 versus Middle Tennesssee State. In addition, she tallied 22 rebounds in Furman's first exhibition game this year, just one shy of the Furman record of 23, set in 1991 by Natalie Cleckley. Hopefully, she is saving the actual record-breaking numbers for games that count. Smith already holds the school record for free throws in a season (207) and career (528).
Signees: The Lady Paladins landed four signees during the recent early signing period: Deshara Shealey, 5-11, Guard, Greenbay, Va. (Prince Edward High) Kim Lawrence, 6-0, Forward, Atlanta, Ga. (Woodward Academy) Laney Harris, 6-0, Guard, Loganville, Ga. (Loganville) Alison Thomason, 5-10, Forward, Pickens, S.C. (Pickens)
