FURMAN OUTDISTANCES APPALACHIAN STATE WITH SECOND HALF BURST

BOX SCORE

BOONE, North Carolina -- Furman’s Lady Paladin basketball team stretched its win streak to three with a 77-66 victory over the Mountaineers of Appalachian State Saturday in the Holmes Convocation Center. The Lady Paladins outscored ASU 43-33 in the second period to take the 11-point decision.

The Mountaineers connected on four three-pointers in the first period and were a perfect five for five from the line, but Furman outscored ASU 18-6 in the paint and Kim Lawrence sank a baseline jumper with 40 seconds left in the period to send the Lady Paladins to the halftime locker room with a 34-33 advantage. At the break, Lawrence was Furman’s leading scorer, with nine points, while Aisha Bryant paced the Mountaineers with 14 in the first half.

In the second period Furman forward Jen Nadalin came alive, scoring 10 points in the first 13 minutes to key a 28-21 Lady Paladin run that put Furman ahead 62-54 with 7:51 left to play. ASU took a 35-34 lead with the first basket of the half, but a Nadalin basket at 19:12 gave the Lady Paladins the lead for the last time and was the genesis of a nine-point Furman run. ASU pulled to with three, 43-40, at 15:49, but a Nadalin layup combined with back-to-back three pointers by Laney Harris stretched the FU lead back to nine. The Apps never got closer than five for the rest of the game and Furman’s lead remained in double digits for the last 6:01

The Mountaineers were led in the game by Bryant’s 27 points, while Crystal Barriner added 14. Furman had four scorers in double figures with Kim Lawrence’s 14 leading the way. Lauren Few added 13 points, while Jen Nadalin and Tommi Paris each contributed 10. Orion Wake poured in nine points and grabbed nine rebounds to key the Lady Paladins’ 42-34 advantage on the boards.

With the win Furman improves to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the Southern Conference, while Appalachian State moves to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in league play. Furman will face Davidson on Wednesday, Jan. 14, in a 7 p.m. game at Belk Arena.
