LATE RUN LEADS SEAHAWKS BY LADY PALADINS
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Junior guard Cherie Lea poured in 27 points and keyed a late spurt to lift UNC Wilmington over Furman, 74-56, in the championship game of the Hilton Wilmington Riverside Women's Basketball Classic Saturday at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks, who shot 50.9 percent from the floor, improved to 3-0 on the season after winning two games in their own tournament. The Lady Paladins saw their record evened at 2-2 on the season.
Lea, out of Blanch, N.C., scored her 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including 14 points after intermission, and added six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Rachel Wojdowski scored 14 points off the bench and senior center Shameka Montgomery contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior guard Deshara Shealey paced Furman with 22 points and sophomore center Jen Nadalin contributed 16 markers for the Lady Paladins, who made just 37 percent of their field goal attempts.
With UNCW clinging to a 45-42 lead midway through the second half, Shealey nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing with 9:49 remaining to even the score for Furman. But the Seahawks outscored the Lady Paladins, 14-2, over the next four minutes to break the game open. Lea collected five points in the rally, including a short jumper in the lane with 6:14 remaining that staked UNCW to a 59-47 cushion. In the first half, Lea scored 11 of UNCW's first 12 points as the Seahawks jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead.
UNCW pushed the margin to as many as 12 points before Furman outscored the Seahawks, 11-2, over the final 2:50 to cut the halftime deficit to 28-26.
The Seahawks return to action next Friday with an appearance in the Radisson Suites Roundball Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. UNCW faces Pittsburgh in a 5 p.m. tipoff at Florida Atlantic University. Furman plays at High Point Wednesday at 7 p.m.
