LADY PALADINS STUMBLE AT DAVIDSON 73-51

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Behind 25 points from sophomore Emily Callahan and 13 from junior Ashley Hallsted, the Davidson women's basketball team notched its 10th victory of the year, defeating Furman, 73-51, Saturday evening in Belk Arena. The win was the third in the last four games for Davidson (10-11, 5-7 SoCon) while Furman (11-10, 7-5) has now dropped two in a row.

After Furman's Laney Harris hit a three-pointer at the 11:35 mark in the opening period to put the Paladins up 10-7, the Wildcats responded with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes and never trailed again.

The Paladins managed to cut the deficit to two at 20-18, but a jumper by Callahan and a trifecta by junior Robyn Flewelling quickly gave Davidson a 25-18 advantage. Back-to-back three-pointers by Hallsted extended the Wildcats' lead to 11 late in the first period before the 'Cats settled on a 36-26 cushion at the break.

In the second stanza, Deshara Shealey kept Furman hanging around by tallying 10 of the first 14 points by the Paladins. With Davidson only up 49-40 midway through the period, four different Wildcats contributed to a 10-2 spurt to put the game away.

The Wildcats shot 51.9 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes and 48 percent (24-of-50) overall. Defensively, Davidson held Furman to just 30.2 percent shooting for the night. The Wildcats also outrebounded the Paladins, 43-27, in the win.

For the fourth time this year, Callahan finished with at least 20 points in a game. The forward was 8-for-14 from the field and tied a career high with four three-pointers. Senior Bethany Schott recorded a game-high 12 rebounds, one shy of her career best.

Shealey paced Furman with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Kim Lawrence chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.
