LAWRENCE SCORES 29, LADY PALADINS BREEZE BY CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 84-64

WILMINGTON, N.C.-- Junior Kim Lawrence scored 29 points on 12-17 shooting from the field to lead the Furman Lady Paladins to an 84-64 victory over Charleston Southern in the opening round of the Hilton Wilmington Riverside Classic Friday evening in Wilmington, N.C.

Furman, who trailed only once in the contest, built a 47-29 halftime lead on the strength of five three-pointers. The Lady Paladins connected on 5-10 treys and hit 19 of its 34 first half field goal attempts. For the evening, Furman was 7-14 beyond the arc, led by Deshara Shealey's three three-pointers.

In the second half, the Lady Paladins built their lead to 25 at 71-46 with 8:04 remaining before the Buccaneers trimmed the advantage to 77-64 with two minutes to go. Shealey hit two free throws and a two point bucket, while Lawrence scored her final two points for the 84-64 margin.

Lawrence added eight rebounds, three assists and three block shots to go along with her 29 point effort. Shealey added 22 points and eight boards and five assists, while sophomores Laney Harris and Jen Nadalin contributed eight points each.

Danielle Baskin paced Charleston Southern with 16 points, including four three-pointers. Erin Jedlikowski chipped in 10 for the Buccaneers.

The victory improves the Lady Paladins to 2-1 on the season, while Charleston Southern falls to 1-2.

Furman advances to the championships game of the Hilton Wilmington Riverside Classic to face the winner of Jackson vs. UNC Wilmington on Saturday evening.
