PITTSBURGH HANDS FURMAN ITS FIRST LOSS 75-45
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Behind 10 3-pointers, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the year with a 75-45 victory over visiting Furman Monday night at the Petersen Events Center.
Pittsburgh came out on fire and opened up a 30-7 lead at the 9:28 mark of the first half behind five 3-pointers during that span. Two treys each by Brooke Stewart and Amy Kunich sparked the 3-point outburst.
The Lady Paladins went on an 8-0 run to pull within 15 points (30-15) with 7:38 left in the first frame, but Pittsburgh responded and with 11 seconds to go in the half, Stewart nailed her third 3-pointer and gave the Panthers a 42-19 halftime advantage.
Pittsburgh shot 53 percent (16 of 30) from the field in the first half compared to Furman's 26 percent (9 of 35). In the second half, the Panthers continued to pour it on Furman, leading by as many as 36 points (73-37) with just under three minutes to go before easily winning their second game in as many tries this year.
Stewart led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 3 of 6 from behind the arc. Kunich finished with 10 points and six assists, while Laine Selwyn added team highs of seven rebounds and seven assists.
Katie Roach led the Lady Paladins with 12 points while Jen Nadalin added 11 markers. Pittsburgh returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Loretto, Pa., to face St. Francis (Pa.). Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at DeGol Arena.
Furman returns to action on Friday whenit battles Charleston Southern in Wilmington, N.C.
