FURMAN FALLS 73-63 TO SPLIT WITH APPALACHIAN STATE
GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin basketball team dropped a 73-63 decision to Appalachian State Monday night in Timmons Arena, splitting the season series with the Mountaineers.
In the first period, ASU shot a blistering 60.9% (14-of-23) from the field and 66.7% (6-of-9) from three-point range to take a 42-29 lead into the halftime locker room. At the break sophomore Lindsay Smith was ASU's leading scoring with 15 points on four-of-five shooting from the field.
The second half was a mirror image of the first and Furman ended the night winning the turnover battle 26-16, but shooting just 15.4% (2-of-13) from three-point range to the Mountaineer's 52.9% (9-of-17) mark. In addition, the Lady Paladins were unable to shut down Tiffani Johnson, who scored a team-high 24 points and claimed 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Smith, ASU's first-half "go-to player" was held scoreless in the second period to total 15 points for the game, while Kiki Conyers added 13 and Jaymi Wilson tallied 11.
The Lady Paladins were led by Kim Lawrence, who scored 19 with nine rebounds and eight steals to pace Furman in all three categories. Deshara Shealey added 16 points and topped the team with five assists, but no other Lady Paladins reached double-digit scoring for the game.
With the win Appalachian State improved to 6-14 overall and 5-6 in the Southern Conference, while Furman fell to 11-9 overall and 7-4 in league action. The Lady Paladins will face Davidson College this Saturday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on CSS. Appalachian State, meanwhile, will travel to East Tennessee State.
