LADY PALADINS FALL 71-62 IN SOCON SEMIFINALS

CHARLESTON, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin basketball team dropped a 71-62 decision to UNC Greensboro Saturday in the semifnals of the Southern Conference Tournament. The Spartans of UNCG will face Chattanooga Sunday at 3 p.m. in the tournament's finale.

Furman took an early lead and held a 33-28 advantage at halftime, but the Spartans kept chipping away, forcing 10 second half turnovers by the Lady Paladins and hitting 15-of-21 free throws to secure the victory.

The Lady Paladins, who had won 13 of 15 games this season when leading at the half, were led by senior Mary Brock's 15 point effort, while sophomore Kim Lawrence added 11. Junior center Orion Wake totaled seven points and claimed a team-high 11 rebounds, but still UNCG outdid Furman on the boards, 41-34.

With the loss, Furman ended the 2001-02 season with a 17-12 record. The game also marked the end of head coach Sherry Carter's 20-year career at Furman.

"I have had great athletes at Furman who have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, and everything else," said Carter. . "They have been the reason I coached and I have enjoyed each of them."
