SOCON MEDIA PICK FURMAN FOURTH
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Southern Conference media has cast their ballots and
selected Chattanooga to win the 2001-02 regular season crown.
The Southern Conference coaches and media met in Charleston, SC, for the 2001
Tip-Off media day. Chattanooga claimed 23 of 24 first-place votes, tallying
239 points, followed by Georgia Southern with 207. UNC Greensboro earned the
remaining first-place vote and were selected to finish third.
The Lady Mocs shared the regular season title in 2000-01 with Georgia Southern,
both teams going 15-3 in SoCon action. Chattanooga has won seven regular season
titles, including four shared crowns. Georgia Southern has three titles to its
credit. The Mocs went on to win the 2001 tournament title, edging UNC Greensboro
64-63 in the title game. UNC Greensboro won the 1998-99 regular season after
taking home the 1997-98 tournament crown. Appalachian State, Furman and East
Tennessee State have also won regular season titles.
The Mountain Dew Southern Conference Basketball Championships will be held February
28-March3, 2002. The women will play the first two rounds at McAlister Field
House on The Citadel campus before moving to the North Charleston Coliseum for
the semifinals and championship. All of the menıs games will be played at the
coliseum.
