FURMAN PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON COACHES POLL


ASHEVILLE, N.C. --
The Southern Conference womenıs basketball coaches have cast their ballots and selected Chattanooga to win the 2001-02 regular season crown.

Chattanooga received nine of the ten first-place votes, finishing with 81 points. Georgia Southern received the remaining first-place vote and was selected to finish second with 70 points. UNC Greensboro received 68 votes for third, followed by Furman, Western Carolina and College of Charleston.

The Lady Mocs shared the regular season title in 2000-01 with Georgia Southern, both teams going 15-3 in SoCon action. Chattanooga has won seven regular season titles, including four shared crowns. Georgia Southern has three titles to its credit. The Mocs went on to win the 2001 tournament title, edging UNC Greensboro 64-63 in the title game. UNC Greensboro won the 1998-99 regular season after taking home the 1997-98 tournament crown. Appalachian State, Furman and East Tennessee State have also won regular season titles.

The Mountain Dew Southern Conference Basketball Championships will be held February 28-March3, 2002. The women will play the first two rounds at McAlister Field House on The Citadel campus before moving to the North Charleston Coliseum for the semifinals and championship. All of the menıs games will be played at the coliseum.
