Southern Conference Coaches Select Womenıs Basketball Player, Coach Freshman of the Year

ASHEVILLE, NC -- The Southern Conference womenıs basketball coaches today named their Player, Coach and Freshman of the Year for 2002. Woffordıs Jenny Nett received the Player of the Year honor; Monica Pope from Furman earned the Freshman of the Year; and UNC Greensboro head coach Lynne Agee was tabbed the Coach of the Year.

A senior guard from Louisville, KY, Nett has led the conference in scoring and has recorded two of the top performances this season. She tallied 38 points against Western Carolina on December 30 and turned in a 37 point performance against Appalachian State on February 16. Nett has also been among the conference leaders in rebounding, averaging 5.4 boards per game and is 15th in field goal percentage, shooting 44.1 percent. Nett was recently named a Verizon Academic All-District selection for the second straight year, sporting a 3.94 GPA in business economics and English.

Pope, a guard from Union City, GA, is among the conference leaders in scoring, averaging 11.7 points per game. She leads the Lady Paladins with 25 treys and is shooting 73.9 percent from the free throw line. Pope also has 30 steals to her credit along with 59 assists.

In her 21st year at UNC Greensboro, Agee has picked up her second Coach of the Year honor. She led the Spartans to a 19-8 overall record, 14-4 in the conference, and a share of the regular season title in 2002. This is her second regular season title and first shared as the Spartans won it outright in 1999. Her overall record at UNCG of 435-163 includes 65 SoCon wins since joining the league in 1997 and she is the first coach to guide a team to the NCAA Tournament in all three divisions.
