Southern Conference Media Association Named Pope Freshman of the Year

CHARLESTON, SC ­ The Southern Conference today announced its 2002 Media All-League teams as selected by the Southern Conference Sports Media Association. Five member institutions were represented on the media teams.

Leading the first team is the SoCon Media Player of the Year Jenny Nett of Wofford, who swept the yearly honor, as she was also named the coaches Player of the Year. A senior from Wofford, Nett was a consensus all-conference selection and leads the conference averaging 20.4 points. Western Carolina senior Laura Echols, who was also a coaches all-league pick, is second in the scoring, averaging more than 19 points a game.

Chattanooga placed two on the first team. Three-time coaches all-conference selection Damita Bullock has been among the conference leaders in scoring, rebounding and shooting throughout the season. The senior was also a two-time Player of the Year. Teammate Miranda Warfield, a sophomore, has consistently been in the top five in scoring in the league and is averaging 13.2 points per game. She also leads the league with a 43.2 three-point field goal percentage.

The second team features five seniors. Georgia Southernšs Alie Rousseau has led the league all season in three-point field goals made and broke the Southern Conference record for three-point attempts in a season. Teammate Danna Simpson leads the league in steals with 62 and is eight away from tying the Georgia Southern season record. UNC Greensborošs Samika Foster is averaging 10.3 points per game and is tied for second in the league with 53 steals. The Spartansš Brianne Dodgen is scoring at an 11.1 points per game clip and pulling down five boards. Davidsonšs Janna Magette has led the league all season from the free-throw line and is currently shooting 86.3 from the charity stripe. She is also third in the league in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game.

The media selected Furmanšs Monica Pope as the Freshman of the Year. Pope is the leaguešs leading freshman scorer, averaging 11.7 points per game. She is also among the conference leaders in free-throw percentage, shooting 73.9 percent from the line.

UNC Greensborošs Lynne Agee was selected as the Coach of the Year. She led the Spartans to a 19-8 record, 14-4 in the conference and a share of the regular season title. Her overall record of 435-163 at UNCG includes 65 wins since joining the league in 1997.
