FURMAN FALLS 62-57 ON SENIOR DAY

South Carolina -- On the day that Lady Paladin basketball fans said
goodbye to seniors Mary Brock and Althea Bufford, and to 20-year head
coach Sherry Carter, the Eagles of Georgia Southern handed Furman a 62-57
defeat in the usually friendly confines of Timmons Arena.
GSU's Shawnica Hill scored a career high 20 points in leading the Eagle offense on Saturday, while Danna Simpson added eight and every Eagle but one who saw action got on the board.
GSU jumped out to an early lead and held a 32-26 advantage at the half. Furman came out hot in second period after shooting just 28.6% in the first half and took a one-point lead, 37-36, at the 14:14 mark on a Deshara Shealey free throw. The Eagles immediately regained the lead on a Hill field goal, but Shealey sank the Lady Paladins' first three pointer of the game to put Furman on top by two again at the 13:03 mark. Furman and Georgia Southern continued to exchange baskets and despite a GSU lead that increased to seven at the 8:54 mark, Furman came back to take the lead, 51-49, at 5:55.
The fifth tie of the game occurred at 2:39. Just 13 seconds later Hill scored again to give GSU the lead, which the Eagles held until the final buzzer. Furman was held scoreless in the final 1:31, while Georgia Southern's Danna Simpson sank two free throws with 12 seconds remaining and the Eagles up by three to secure the victory for her team.
Furman was led on the day by Shealey and Bufford, who each scored 11. Mary Brock added 10 and claimed eight boards to share rebounding honor with Shealey.
With the win, Georgia Southern improves to 12-12 overall and 9-7 in the league. GSU also climbed into a tie for third in the Southern Conference, after defeating the league-leading UNC Greensboro Spartans last week and Furman today. Furman is tied with the Eagles in the league standings, with a 14-11 overall mark and 9-7 league record. The Lady Paladins will play at East Tennessee State Tuesday at 7 p.m., while Georgia Southern goes to Davidson in another 7 p.m. start.
