CHARLOTTE STARS TOP FURMAN 74-66 IN
WOMEN'S EXHIBITION BASKETBALL ACTION

GREENVILLE -- India Adams scored a game high 14 points and teammates Tia Pascal and Nikki Herron chipped in 12 points each to lead the visiting Charlotte Stars to a 74-66 win over the Furman Lady Paladins in exhibition basketball action Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

Adams, a former standout at Belmont Abbey College, converted 4-of-5 field goals and 6-of-7 free throws to pace Charlotte. The Stars drained 24-of-33 free throws (72.7 percent) in the contest and 25-of-56 field goal attempts (44.6 percent).

Furman placed three players in double figures, led by junior Orion Wake's 13 points. Deshara Shealey and Althea Bufford followed with 11 points each.

Trailing 36-29 at halftime, Furman used a 9-2 run to start the second half to tie the game at 38-38 on a pair of free throws by Wake with 15:50 left, but Charlotte answered with a jump shot by Adams 13 seconds later to regain the lead.

The Stars extended their advantage to as many as 13 points at 53-40 following a pair of free throws by former Lady Paladin standout Janice Rhynehardt-Tucker at the 11:07 juncture before the Lady Paladins fashioned a 16-5 spurt over the next four minutes to get within two points at 58-56 on a layup by Katie Roach with 7:06 remaining.

The Stars, however, answered with a pair of free throws by Charlita Davis and a bucket by Rhynehardt to give Charlotte a 62-56 lead on the way to the win.

Furman opens its 2001-02 regular season on Friday at South Carolina. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m.
