BUFFORD LEADS FURMAN TO DOUBLING OF WOFFORD

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman junior Althea Bufford didn't let a little case of the flu slow her down as the Lady Paladin basketball team doubled up Wofford 76-38 Saturday at Timmons Arena. It was the first time Furman doubled its opponent's points total since Jan. 30, 1991, when the Lady Paladins handed Winthrop a 98-47 loss, and it was Wofford's lowest points total in three seasons.

The game's first period gave little indication that the final outcome would be so one-sided. Furman took an early lead, but the Terriers cut the Lady Paladin advantage to five with 5:26 left in the half. In the final five minutes of the period, however, the Lady Paladins outscored Wofford 12-4 to take a 39-23 lead into the locker room.

The game got out of hand in the second half, when hot shooting by Furman (18-of-34, .529) combined with a Wofford team gone cold (6-of-27, .222) to give Furman its biggest win over the Terriers in the series' history.

The 5-7 Bufford, who has been under the weather for the last few days, scored 22 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the field. She was joined in double figures by senior Kena Hodges, who tallied 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior guard Torrie Scott led the Lady Paladins at the boards with 11, where the team as a whole racked up a 51-31 advantage over Wofford.

The Terriers were led by Nancy Dubuisson's nine points, while Stephanie Adelaine and Jenny Nett each tallied five rebounds.

With the win, Furman improves to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the Southern Conference, while Wofford falls to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the league. The Lady Paladins will face the league-leading Mocs of Chattanooga on Wednesday, Jan. 17, in Chattanooga.
