FURMAN'S QUAN PROWELL NAMED
SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FRESHMAN-OF-THE-YEAR

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman Paladins forward Quan Prowell has been named Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Year in voting by league's head coaches, it was announced today.

"This is a tremendous honor for Quan and for Furman," said Paladin head coach Larry Davis, "but frankly it's an award that could have gone to any of our four freshmen who played a lot of minutes for us this year. Quan has had a good season and has a chance to be a really fine basketball player with continued work, but I'd say this is a pretty good start."

A 6-foot-7 product of Columbus, Ga., and Jordan High School, Prowell trailed only teammate Robby Bostain among league freshmen in scoring, averaging 10.1 points per game despite sitting out four midseason contests with a knee injury. He averaged 4.3 rebounds and shot 53.5 percent from the field, including 36.6 percent from 3-point range. A 72.0 percent free throw shooter, he also finished second on the team in blocks with 25.

His 2003-04 campaign included a season high 22-point performance against UNC Greensboro and an 18-point, MVP outing in a 92-56 triumph over Lipscomb in the championship game of the Jack In Box Furman Holiday Classic in late December. He also tallied 15 points in a 91-84 overtime loss at Minnesota, 14 points in a 77-73 win over Wofford, and 12 points in the Paladins' 72-63 triumph over Western Carolina.

Prowell is the sixth Furman player to garner league freshman-of-the-year honors. Previous Paladin honorees include George Singleton (1981), Bruce Evans (1989), Derek Waugh (1990), Bill Harder (1993), and Chuck Vincent (1995).

Furman (16-11, 8-8 SoCon), the Southern Conference's South Division No. 4 seed and winners of four of its last five games, squares off against North Division No. 5 seed Western Carolina (13-14, 6-10 SoCon) Wednesday at noon in league tournament action at the North Charleston Coliseum.
