FURMAN'S SOUCHU NAMED SOUTHERN
CONFERENCE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK

GREENVILLE -- Furman University freshman forward Karim Souchu (SUE-shoe) has been named Southern Conference Player-of-the-Week, it was announced today.

Souchu, a 6-foot-6 French native, averaged 22.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in helping Furman to wins over East Tennessee State and VMI last week. The player-of-the-week honor is his second scroll of the season.

Souchu's 27-point performance against VMI last Saturday enabled the Paladins to snap a 15-game road losing streak. He tallied 17 points in Furman's 80-73 triumph over East Tennessee State in Greenville. Souchu also combined for two assists, a block, and four steals in the two contests.

On Monday Souchu was one of five players named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team. He currently leads Furman in scoring (16.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg). His 16.0 ppg average is the highest by a Paladin freshman since George Singleton average 16.1 for the 1980-81 season.

Furman, 12-17, takes a three-game winning streak into Thursday's Mountain Dew Southern Conference Tournament first round game against UNC Greensboro at the Bi-Lo Center. Tipoff is set for approximately 2:30 p.m., or 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1 between Chattanooga and Western Carolina.
