FURMAN'S MAKSHANTSEV ACADEMICALLY INELIGIBLE;
TO MISS A MINIMUM OF 10 MORE GAMES

GREENVILLE ‹ Furman University head basketball coach Larry Davis announced today that senior forward Stanislav Makshantsev will miss a minimum of 10 more games this season after failing to maintain his athletic eligibility.

Suspended on Oct. 15 by Davis for the Paladins' first eight games for violation of team rules, Makshantsev lost his athletic eligibility by failing to achieve a necessary grade in an independent study, which he completed last week. He could regain his eligibility at the conclusion of Furman's fall academic term on Dec. 15 but then would begin to serve his eight-game suspension, which only applies to games that he is eligible. If Makshantsev regains his eligibility, his earliest possible return would be for the Paladins' Jan. 17 home game against Wofford.

"This is unfortunate for Stanislav, but the reality of athletics at Furman University is that it is the responsibility of our student-athletes to perform in the classroom before they can participate in athletics," said Davis on Tuesday.

Makshantsev, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound product of Alma Ata, Kazakhstan, and the lone senior of this year's squad, led Furman in scoring a year ago, averaging 14.5 ppg.

Furman currently sports a 4-4 record following Monday night's 86-82 overtime loss to Georgia.
