Furman Inks Junior College All-American To National Letter Of Intent

GREENVILLE -- Furman University head basketball coach Larry Davis announced today that Stanislav Makshantsev, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound All-America forward from Northeast Nebraska Community College, has signed a national letter of intent with the Paladins.

Makshantsev, a native of Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, earned third team All-America honors after averaging 23.5 ppg and 10.4 rpg this past season in helping his squad to a 17-12 record and third place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IX Tournament. He shot 60.1% from the field and connected on 76.7% of his free throw opportunities.

"We are extremely happy to have signed a player of Stanislav's stature," said head coach Larry Davis Thursday morning in making the announcement. "In losing Chuck Vincent (to graduation), it was very important to replace Chuck's scoring ability with someone older and more mature with the ability the score. Stanislav can accomplish many of the same things as Chuck. Although I'm sure there will be an adjustment period coming from the junior college ranks, Stanislav has the potential to be an outstanding player in the Southern Conference."

"Stanislav is a proto-type power forward with ability to finish inside and shooting range out to 17'" said Northeast Community College head coach Fred Johnson. "He attempted 295 free throws for us this year and has excellent quickness and the ability to run the floor. He is a wonderful young man with a work ethic the likes I have never seen in my coaching career."

Makshantsev, Furman's first junior college recruit since 1979, is the second recruit to sign with Furman this week. On Wednesday, the Paladins announced the signing of 6-foot-11 center Stevan Petrovic from Norfolk, Nebraska. Counting Petrovic and Makshantsev, Furman now has four signees on the year, including two from the fall recruiting season: Anthony Thomas, a 6-foot-3 wing guard from Atlanta, Ga. (Woodward Academy), and 6-foot point guard Paul Foster from Teachey, N.C. (Wallace Rose High School).
