Furman: Larry Davis (Asbury '78)
William & Mary: Charlie Woollum (William & Mary '62)
Wednesday's Furman-William & Mary game will mark the 49th meeting in basketball between the two schools but the first clash of the Paladins and Tribe since William & Mary left the Southern Conference in 1977. Furman won the last meeting between the two schools, taking an 88-83 decision in Greenville during the 1976-77 campaign. William & Mary leads the overall series 25-23.
Furman owns an 18-6 record versus William & Mary in Greenville. In Williamsburg, the Tribe stands 15-4 versus Furman. In five neutral site meetings over the years, William & Mary has tallied a 4-1 mark against the Paladins. One of those "neutral" site encounters was a 66-55 Furman triumph over the Tribe in the finals of the 1975 Southern Conference Tournament championship in Greenville.
Wednesday night's Furman-William & Mary matchup will mark Furman head coach Larry Davis' first encounter with the Tribe. William & Mary mentor Charlie Woollum, meanwhile, is 0-1 versus Furman in 23 seasons as a head coach. Woollum's lone encounter with the Paladins (68-67 loss) came in the consolation round of the 1982-83 Clemson IPTAY Invitational while serving as head coach at Bucknell.
T MINUS ONE...If the latest Timmons Arena construction timetable holds true, tonight's Furman-William & Mary game will mark the Paladins' last game in the Herman W. Lay Physical Activities Center. Furman, which has played its home games in the PAC since vacating the now razed Greenville Memorial Auditorium following the 1995-96 season, will play its first home game in Timmons Arena on Dec. 30 against Northeastern Illinois. Furman's women's basketball team is scheduled to play the first game in Timmons Arena on Dec. 20 against Georgia Southern. The reality of leaving the PAC will doubtless bring few tears to the eyes of Paladin fans, as Furman has only posted an 8-8 record in the PAC in 16 games within its confines.
INJURY BUG BITES AGAIN...With two players already sidelined with injuries, Furman received more bad news Saturday night when sophomore guard/forward Que Gaither fractured the navicular bone in his left hand in the overtime period of Furman's 75-73 loss to Stetson in DeLand, Fla. Gaither, who is expected miss 4-6 weeks of action, had been averaging 9.8 minutes and 4.0 points per game as a backup second guard and small forward. His injury leaves Furman with only eight scholarship players available for the William & Mary game. Gaither joins junior center Will Coles (stress fracture) and sophomore guard Michael Campbell (broken nose) on Furman's injured list.
SMITH GOES FOR CAREER HIGH...Junior guard Bubba Smith scored a career high 27 points in the Paladins' 75-73 overtime loss to Stetson last Saturday night in DeLand. Fla. In connecting on 8-of-12 field goal attempts, including 5-of-6 three-pointers, and 6-of-7 free throws in 37 minutes of action, Smith topped his previous career high of 19 points set two years ago against Appalachian State. The 5-of-6 three-point shooting performance (.833%) was the third best single game mark by a Paladin. Smith enters the William & Mary game as Furman's second leading scorer (14.2 ppg).
SHOOTING IMPROVES...After shooting only 41.7% from the field (66-of-158) in its first three games, Furman has converted 50.4% of its field goal attempts (54-of-107) in its last two games. Included in Furman's improved shooting numbers is noticeably better accuracy from three-point range, as the Paladins have connected on 12-of-24 three-pointers (50.0%) in their last two contests after making good on only 11-of-38 three-point attempts (22.9%) in the first three games. Through five games Furman is shooting 45.3% from the field and 31.9% from three-point range.
VINCENT LEADING THE WAY...Named Southern Conference Pre-Season Player-of-the-Year by league head coaches at the league's annual basketball tip-off in Greensboro, N.C., in late October, two-time all-league senior forward Chuck Vincent currently leads Furman in seven statistical categories heading into the William & Mary game: scoring (15.6 ppg), rebounding (9.2 rpg), minutes played (35.4 mpg), field goal percentage (62.8%), assists (14), blocks (4), and steals (9). Vincent, who tallied 25 points and claimed 14 rebounds in 34 minutes of work against Mercer in Macon in the Paladins' lone victory (76-65) thus far, registered 41 minutes of action and scored 14 points in Furman's 75-73 overtime loss to Stetson last Saturday. He currently ranks 19th on the Paladins' all-time scoring chart (1,257 points) and ninth on the school's career rebounds ledger (764 rebounds). His 14-point, 7-rebound effort versus Stetson on Saturday moved him past Russ Hunt (1,248 points, 1970-73) on the scoring chart and past Bruce Evans (761 rebounds, 1988-92) on Furman's career rebounding ledger.
