MAULE”S TWO RUN TRIPLE LIFTS UNCG BASEBALL PAST FURMAN 5-3

GREENSBORO, N.C.— Junior Jay Maule’s triple to right center capped off a three run eighth inning, as the UNC Greensboro baseball team came from behind to defeat Furman, 5-3, in Southern Conference action Friday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

UNCG (18-4, 5-2 SoCon) opened the scoring the second on a solo home run by freshman Danny Valencia.

Furman (7-14, 1-3 SoCon) scored all three of its runs in the seventh inning. With one out, and runners on second and third, A. J. Davidiuk laced a double to left field scoring Matthew Betsill and Case Cassedy. Davidiuk scored two batters later courtesy of a fielding error by the UNCG outfielder.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior Ryan Gordon’s sacrifice fly scored Nate Alden to help to Spartans cut the Paladin lead to one, at 3-2.

Senior Jarrett Santos (7-1) tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. UNCG starting pitcher Chris Mason, had his best outing of the season, going 6.1 innings, allowing three runs and striking out five. Kyle Funk (1-3) suffered the loss for the Paladins.

Valencia led the Spartans offensively with three hits. Jeremy Roulin and Maule each had two. Cassedy and Betsill had a pair of hits for Furman.

Game two of the series is Saturday at 1 p.m and will be broadcast on WCSZ 1070 AM and teamline.
