FURMAN FALLS TO DALLAS BAPTIST 8-5 ON FIRST DAY OF SOUTHWEST DIAMOND CLASSIC

Fort Worth, Texas-- Sean Burgess went 2-for-2 with three RBI to lead Dallas Baptist to a 8-5 win over Furman on the first day of baseball action at the Southwest Diamond Classic in Fort Worth, Texas.

With the win the Patriots improve to 7-1 on the season, while the Paladins fall to 1-2 on the year.

Senior Craig Caudill began the scoring for Furman when his double plated Andrew Greene to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead.

However, Dallas Baptist answered in the bottom of the first inning when Ryan Olivo singled in Cody Montgomery, knotting the game at 1-1.

The Patriots then went ahead in the second inning after Burgess tripled, scoring Ned Yost to make it 2-1. Daniel Magness followed with a sacrifice fly, which drove in Burgess, extending the lead to 3-1.

After plating a run in the fourth inning, Furman reclaimed the lead in the fifth, scoring two runs off one hit and an error. Caudill cross the plate first when Lance Broadway threw a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Dominic Franchini followed with a ground-out, which drove in Derek Norman to give the Paladins a 4-3 edge.

Dallas Baptist responded with a single run in the bottom of the frame and then took the lead again in the sixth inning when Mongomery’s sacrifice fly plated Ben Zobrist.

The Paladins, though, climbed right back in the game, tying the score at 5-5 in the seventh on a Caudill RBI single, but the Patriots proved to be the better team, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead for good.

Case Cassedy (0-1) tooked the loss for the Paladins while, Aaron Klusmen (1-0) picked up with win.

Furman returns to action tomorrow when the Paladins face Oklahoma State at 3:00 p.m.
