BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University baseball committed seven errors and allowed 25 total runs as Furman swept a doubleheader from the Mountaineers 14-10 and 11-2 Saturday afternoon at Red Lackey Field.

Thanks in part to a six-run third inning, Appalachian (6-32, 3-20 Southern Conference) jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the opener. However, Furman reliever David Mitchell silenced the Mountaineer bats the rest of the way to allow the Paladins to chip away at the lead.

Despite the 5.1 innings of four-hit, one-run relief by Mitchell, ASU still took a 10-8 advantage into the eighth inning. A single Furman tally in the eighth made it 10-9 heading into the final frame, where the Paladins exploded for five runs off a pair of Appalachian relievers to claim the victory.

Taylor Craig allowed three runs on three hits in an inning of work to suffer the loss and fall to 1-6 on the season. Mitchell earned the win with the impressive performance out of the bullpen and moved to 3-5 for the campaign.

Ryan Merz led the Mountaineers at the plate in game one, going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored, while Joey Robinson blasted his second home run of the season and drove in three. Furman first baseman Case Cassedy went 4-for-6 with three doubles, a home run and four RBI in the victory.

Furman (15-22, 7-10 SoCon) continued to swing the hot bats in the nightcap en route to the sweep. After a pair of runs in the top of the first, the Paladins notched four more in the third to take an early 6-0 lead.

The Mountaineers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third, but could not keep Furman off the board, as the Paladins cruised to the victory with a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings.

Freshman Matt Klinker earned the victory for the Paladins to move to 3-1 on the season. ASU starter Nick Peterson, who threw 107 pitches in just four innings of work, fell to 1-9 on the campaign with the loss.

Cassedy continued his onslaught of Mountaineer pitching in game two, going 3-for-5 with another double and three runs scored. For the twinbill, Cassedy was 7-for-11 with a home run, four doubles, four RBI and five runs scored.

Doug Fowler drove in both ASU runs with his team high-tying fourth home run of the season.

The two teams wrap up their Southern Conference series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Red Lackey Field.
