WINTHROP ROUTS FURMAN 15-5
ROCK HILL, SC Bennett Stapf pounded two home runs and drove in six to lead Winthrop to a 15-5 victory over Furman Wednesday night at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, SC.
Trailing 5-4 in the fourth, the Eagles scored four runs to take an 8-4 lead. With two on and nobody out, Matt Repec singled to drive in third baseman David Scoggin and tie the game at 5-5. One batter later Stapf belted a home run over the 390 mark in centerfield to drive in three and give the Eagles an 8-5 edge.
Winthrop scored two more runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh to come away with the 15-5 win.
The win gave the Eagles a 15-1 all-time advantage over the Paladins and moved Winthrop head coach Joe Hudaks all-time record against Furman to 9-0.
Jody Elkins (1-1) pitched two and one-third shutout innings to pick up the win. He struck out two and walked one.
Patrick Griffin (3-4) gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits in three and one-third innings to take the loss for the Paladins. He walked four and struck out one.
Winthrop improved to 28-17 with the win, while Furman fell to 22-19 with the loss.
The Eagles return to action Saturday as they host James Madison at 7:30 p.m.
at The Winthrop Ballpark in the first game of a two-game series. The Paladins
next travel to face Davidson in a key Southern Conference weekend series. The
first game is slated for Friday at 7:00 p.m.
