EAGLES SOAR PAST FURMAN 11-8

Greenville, S.C.--David Scoggin belted two home runs and drove in six RBI to lead Winthrop past Furman 11-8 Wednesday afternoon at Furman Baseball Stadium.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 10-6 on the year, while the Paladins drop to 8-7.

Winthrop opened the scoring in the third inning after Scoggin plated Jacob Dempsey to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

Furman responded in the bottom half of the inning as Jon Stallsmith and Matthew Betsill had back-to-back RBI ground-outs, giving the Paladins a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles then exploded in the fourth inning, scoring three runs off three hits. Dempsey plated the Eagles' first run when his sacrfice fly scored Grant Neidnefeuhr. Scoogin then drove in David Carter on an RBI ground-out, allowing Winthrop to take a 3-2 lead. Chris Leroux followed with a home run to left center to extend the Eagles' lead to 4-2.

In the sixth inning, Scoogin added to his RBI total after he blasted a two-run home run, pushing Winthrop's lead to 6-2.

Furman began to chip away at the Eaglesı lead in the bottom of the sixth as the Paladins scored three runs off four hits to make the score 6-5.

en the Eagles scored three runs to take a four-run lead. Matt Repec walked with the bases loaded to plate Winthrop's first run of the frame, giving the Eagles a two-run advantage. Kyle Roberson followed with an RBI single, driving in Scoggin to make it 8-5. Bennett Stapf finished the scoring for Winthrop after he singled in Leroux, giving the Eagles a 9-5 advantage.

The Paladins tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth when Sam McLain drove in Drew Latora to make the score 9-6, but Scoogin put the game out of reach with his second two-run home run of the game in the top of the ninth, giving the Eagles a 11-6 lead.

Dominic Frankey tried to power Furman back into the game in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run, cutting Winthropıs lead to 11-8. However, Mike Honce forced Latora to ground out, sealing the victory for the visiting Eagles.

Coogie Freedman (0-1) suffered the loss for the Paladins, allowing four runs off four hits in five innings of work. Chase Edwards (2-2) picked up the win, giving up only four runs in five and one-third of an inning.

Cole Hubka led the Paladins at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored.

Furman returns to action when it faces nationally ranked UNC Greensboro in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend at Furman Baseball Stadium. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday at 7:00 p.m.
