STALLSMITH NAMED TIAA-CREF SOCON STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

SPARTANBURG, SC ‹ Furman baseball pitcher Jon Stallsmith has been named the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student Athlete of the Week. Stallsmith earned the victory in Furman's 5-4 road victory over conference opponent College of Charleston on April 20. He pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed only two runs and nine hits while striking out three against the Southern Conference's top hitting team (.308) in the Cougars.

Stallsmith, a senior pitcher from Fox Point, WI, carries a 3.93 GPA as a Spanish and history double major. The Paladins have now won ten of their last twelve games and nine of their last eleven conference games. Furman is the only Southern Conference team with a winning record on the road this season.

The righthanded pitcher also picked up a win against Southern Conference foe Appalachian State, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings of work. For the season, Stallsmith has a 3.21 ERA over 56 innings, which is second lowest ERA on the team and tenth lowest in the conference.

TIAA-CREF, with approximately $259 billion in assets under management, is the premier retirement system for the education and research sector in the U.S., serving 2.5 million participants at 15,000 institutions.
