DAVID MITCHELL NAMED SOUTHERN CONFERENCE PITCHER-OF-THE-WEEK

SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Furman reliever David Mitchell as its Pitcher-of-the-Week.

Mitchell, a 6-1, 180-pound freshman from Houston, TX (Stratford HS) went 1-0 with a pair of saves in Furman’s four games last week. Mitchell picked up the win in relief over 19th-ranked Clemson on May 13 and earned saves in Paladin victories over Georgia State on May 14 and Charleston Southern on May 17. For the week, Mitchell pitched 4.0 innings, did not allow a hit or a run, walked two and fanned five. Mitchell now has seven saves on the season which ties the Furman season record set by Rob Purvis in 2000.

Fifth seeded Furman returns to action on Wednesday when the Paladins face fourth seeded UNC Greensboro at 10 a.m. at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C. in the opening round of the 2003 Southern Conference Tournament.
