FURMAN POUNDS HIGH POINT 13-3

Greenville, S.C.--Dominic Frankey went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and Kyle Funk pitched five effective innings to lead Furman to a 13-3 win and a three-game weekend sweep of High Point Sunday afternoon at Furman Baseball Stadium.

Furman (3-0) took advantage of 12 walks by High Point (0-3) to post its second season-opening sweep of the Panthers in the past three seasons.

After falling behind 2-0, Furman used five walks by High Point starting pitcher John Wanger (0-1) to plate five runs in the second inning for a 5-2 lead.

Leading 6-3 after four innings, the Paladins took control in the fifth, taking advantage of four walks and a Frankey two-run single off Panther reliever Travis Motsinger to make it 12-3.

Frankey later added a solo home run to left field in the eighth off High Pointıs Mark Shorey.

Junior righthander Kyle Funk surrended three runs and eight hits in five innings of work to gain the win, the first of his career, after missing the entire 2002 season with a broken foot.

Jon Stallsmith, Sam Perry, and David Mitchell combined to allow only two hits over the final four innings to help secure the win.

Furman returns to action when it hosts Charlotte February 19 in a 4:00 p.m. game. High Point takes on Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C. on February 12. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
