FURMAN BASEBALL SWEEPS OPENING DAY DOUBLE HEADER AGAINST HIGH POINT 4-0, 1-0

Greenville, S.C.-The Furman Paladins opened the 2003 baseball season by sweeping High Point in a double header 4-0, 1-0 Saturday at Furman Baseball Stadium. It was the first time since 1984 the Paladins have posted back-to-back shutouts.

In game one, senior righthander Tom Mastny (1-0) yielded one hit over six innings of work to pick up the win. Sophomore Patrick Griffin (1-0) tossed a complete game shutout in the second game to earn the victory, allowing one hit, while striking out six.

Furman (2-0) jumped on High Point starter Kevin Burch (0-1) in the third inning of game one, scoring four runs off five singles. After recording two outs to begin the frame, Burch gave up back-to-back singles to Craig Caudill and Derek Norman. Dominic Frankey followed with another single, which scored Caudill, giving the Paladins a 1-0 lead. Later Sam McLain singled to right field, plating Norman and Frankey to push the Paladins¹ lead to 3-0. Cole Hubka finished the scoring for Furman after driving the ball to right field, allowing McLain to score.

Griffin led the Paladins in game two as he faced the minimum number of batters over the first six inning. High Point starter Matt Kniginyzky (1-0) was equally impressive before giving up the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Frankey scored on a wild pitch to seal the victory for Furman.
