MASTNY BLANKS DAVIDSON 6-0

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Furman ace Tom Mastny went eight innings and gave up a mere three hits while David Mitchell pitched a scoreless ninth as the visiting Paladins blanked Davidson, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Park.

The Paladins (24-19, 14-12 SoCon) have won the first two games in the three-game set.

Davidson managed to get its lead-off hitter on base only two times for the afternoon and failed to get a runner past second against either Furman pitcher. Mastny improves to 9-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference competition. His ERA falls to a paltry 1.27 for the season.

The Paladins used some well executed plays to get on the board in the second inning. After Sam McLain singled and Matthew Betsill walked to put runners on first and second with one out, designated hitter Case Cassedy guided a hit through the right side to knock in McLain and push Betsill to third. The next batter, Craig Caudill, gave Furman a 2-0 advantage by delivering a perfect squeeze bunt down the first-base line to bring home Betsill.

In the sixth, Furman's Andrew Greene scored on a two-out wild pitch by Davidson starter Derrik Wolpert to extend the lead to three. Wolpert went 6.1 innings for the Wildcats, allowing just four hits and two earned runs to go along with four strikeouts.

Furman finished off the scoring with three runs in the eighth. Dominic Frankey plated two of those runs with a two-out double down the left-field line.

The two teams conclude their three-game set tomorrow, May 4, at Wildcat Park with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
