FURMAN WINS FOURTH GAME IN A ROW WITH 5-2 VICTORY OVER CHARLOTTE

CHARLOTTE, NC — Clint Hill went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Coogie Freedman pitched three innings of effective relief to pick up his first win of the season as Furman defeated Charlotte 5-2 in baseball action Wednesday evening at Tom and Lib Phillps Field.

With the win, the Paladins improved to 19-14 on the year and have now won four straight games.

Charlotte took an early 1-0 lead when Brad Lamm scored on an Alex Derhak single to center field.

Furman took a 2-1 lead with two runs on two hits in the third inning. Andrew Greene scored the Paladins’ first run on A.J. Davidiuk’s double to left field. Then, Davidiuk scored the other run on an infield groundout.

 The 49ers knotted the score, 2-2, when Poplin connected on his sixth home run of the season over the right field wall in the fifth inning.

Furman regained the lead for good when Clint Hill scored on Dominic Frankey’s double to left field in the seventh inning.  

Furman tacked on a run in the eighth inning when Nick Wajda scored on Andrew Greene’s sacrifice bunt.

The Paladins scored the game’s final run in the ninth inning when Hill scored on a Charlotte wild pitch.

David Mitchell pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the year.

Furman returns to action this weekend when the Paladins travel to face Southern Conference foe College of Charleston. The first game of the three-game series is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Patriots Point.
