FURMAN DROPS FINAL GAME OF SERIES TO WOFFORD 7-6

Steve Casey had three hits, including the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth, in addition to picking up his first collegiate pitching victory as Wofford defeated Furman, 7-6, this afternoon at Duncan Park in Spartanburg, S.C.

Casey’s bases-loaded single to rightfield off Ryan Hodinka, the third Paladin pitcher of the inning, gave the Terriers the win after Furman scored three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game.

Matt Davis and Zach Pittman opened the Wofford ninth with singles.David Dufour then advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt before Brian Casey was walked intentionally to load the bases, setting the stage for Steve Casey who was 7-for-13 at the plate in the weekend
series.

Brian Casey had a pair of doubles for the Terriers while Scott Holloway also had two hits, including a home run to rightcenter, his second of the year, to give Wofford a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

A.J. Davidiuk opened the Furman ninth with a triple before Clint Hill singled him home to close the Furman deficit to 6-4. Drew Latora delivered a pinch-hit run-scoring single to bring the Paladins within
6-5. With the bases loaded and one out, Steve Casey struck out Dominic Frankey before pinch hitter Stephen Hildrith walked to tie the game. Casey then fanned Cole Hubka to end the inning.

After the Terriers (5-23, 3-11) scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead, Furman (15-14, 6-9) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to close within 4-3. The Terriers then scored twice
in the bottom of the eighth on an error by Davidiuk at short and a wild pitch by David Mitchell (2-2).

Wofford starter Jesse Cole allowed five runs on eight hits over eight innings, striking out three and walking three. Furman starter Jon Stallsmith went 7.1 innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on eight
hits. He struck out eight and walked two.

Sam McLain had run-scoring singles for Furman in the fourth and sixth innings.

The Paladins committed three errors and left 11 men on base. All three of Wofford’s SoCon wins this season have come in its final at bat.

Wofford returns to action next weekend when it travels to Georgia Southern. The Terriers have a 1:30 p.m. Saturday doubleheader and a 1:30 p.m. single game Sunday in Statesboro, Ga. Furman hosts Clemson
Tuesday at 7 p.m.
