FURMAN SWEEPS TWINBILL FROM WOFFORD

Spartanburg, S.C.--Tom Mastny allowed just two earned runs on five hits over eight innings in the first game before Matthew Betsill had four hits in the nightcap to lead Furman to a doubleheader sweep of Wofford by scores of 7-3 and 9-3 today at Duncan Park in Spartanburg, S.C.

The twinbill, originally scheduled to start at 12 noon, was delayed two hours and 10 minutes by rain.

Mastny (6-2) came into the game with a 0.98 ERA and allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning before Steve Casey connected on an opposite field solo home run in the sixth. Casey then had a two-out single in the eighth inning to score Zach Pittman from third for the terriers’ final run. Casey had two hits in each game for the Terriers.

Mastny, the SoCon Pitcher of the Week, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Keith Sturkie was a bright spot in relief for Wofford, not allowing an earned run in 4.1 innings of two-hit relief.

The Paladins benefited from four Terrier errors in the first game and five miscues in game two.

Furman (15-13, 6-8) scored four runs in the top of the second in the first game to stake Mastny to an early 4-0 lead. Cole Hubka, who had three hits to key a 12-hit Paladin attack, homered to lead off the fifth inning to give Furman a 6-1 lead. He then added an RBI groundout in the sixth to cap the Paladin scoring.

Betsill added two hits in the first game as he finished 6-for-9 with two RBI on the day. His RBI single in the second inning of game one began the four-run Paladin at bat.

In game two, Betsill singled to open the top of the third before coming around to score on Derek Norman’s two-out double to give Furman a 1-0 lead. Betsill’s RBI single in the fourth and a Terrier error gave the Paladins a 3-0 lead.

Wofford (4-23, 2-11) closed to 3-1 when Jesse Cole opened the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left. However, two more Terrier errors in the sixth led to a pair of unearned runs and a 5-1 Furman lead.

Kyle Funk (3-1) scattered 10 hits while allowing two earned runs over six innings to pick up the victory in the nightcap. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Freshman Jarrod Rampey (2-6) surrendered just three earned runs over eight innings to take the loss.

Brian Casey had three hits for Wofford in the nightcap. The Terriers outhit the Paladins 13-12 but could muster just three runs as Furman was aided by three double plays.

With doubleheader sweep, Furman improved its record against Wofford to 15-2 since the Terriers joined the Southern Conference.

Wofford and Furman will meet again tomorrow at Duncan Park. First pitch is 1:30 p.m.
