THE CITADEL DOWNS FURMAN 5-1

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Chip Cannon pitched eight innings of solid baseball and went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored to lead The Citadel Bulldogs to a 5-1 Southern Conference win over Furman Sunday afternoon.

Cannon, a junior from Charleston, surrendered only five hits and two walks while striking out two on the way to recording his longest outing of the year and first victory of the season (1-2).

Will Coker went 2-for-4 with three RBI and delivered a two-run double to also highlight a 14-hit attack by The Citadel (25-18, 14-7 SoCon), which claimed two wins in the three-game series after dropping three of four to Furman last year.

Jon Stallsmith (2-4) absorbed the loss for Furman (22-18, 12-12), giving up nine hits and four runs in five innings of work. The Paladins, who pounded out a season high 21 hits in Saturday’s 15-8 win over the Bulldogs, were limited to only six singles in the contest.

For the third straight game The Citadel pushed across a run in the first inning when lead off man Jon Aughey belted Furman starter Jon Stallsmith’s third pitch of the game over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs made it 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Cannon and Jason Randall led off with back-to-back singles, but Cannon was later erased at third base on a fielder’s choice. After Josh Stackley struck out, Will Coker delivered a two-out, two-run double over the head of Paladin right fielder Cole Hubka.

One inning later The Citadel extended their advantage to 4-0 with a run scoring single by Cannon that plated Trent Weathers.
Furman got on the board in the sixth on a one-out RBI single to left field by Derek Norman, but the Paladins were held in check thereafter by Cannon, who stranded a pair of runners after getting Dominic Frankey and Sam McLain fly outs to keep it 4-1.

The Bulldogs pushed across their final run in the eighth off Paladin reliever Coogie Freedman when Cannon scored on an RBI single by Coker.

Furman returns to action on Wednesday when it takes on Winthrop in Rock Hill in a 7:30 p.m. game. The Citadel plays at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
