GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Dominic Frankey
went 4-for-5, scored three runs, and keyed a seven-run fourth inning with a
pair of doubles to lead Furman to a 15-8 win over The Citadel in Southern Conference
baseball action Saturday evening at Furman Baseball Stadium.
Frankey, a junior All-Southern Conference first baseman from Hamilton, Ohio,
paced Furmans season high 21-hit onslaught as every Paladin starter collected
a hit, including three by A.J. Davidiuk, who drove in three runs. Case Cassedy
also delivered a pair of base knocks and a three RBI to help Furman (22-17,
12-11 SoCon) match its season high run total.
Starting pitcher Kyle Funk (5-2), the beneficiary of Furmans run support,
surrendered five runs on 11 hits in seven innings to gain the win.
The Citadels Ken Egleton (4-3) took the loss after being roughed up for
seven runs and nine hits over 2 2/3 innings. The Bulldogs (24-19, 13-7 SoCon)
committed three costly errors in the contest, leading to seven unearned runs.
The Citadel grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jon Aughey led off with
a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice before scoring on a Brook Dantzler
single to left.
Furman answered in the bottom of the frame, combining three hits with a Bulldog
error for a pair of runs. Clint Hill led off with a single, moved to second
on a sacrifice, and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming home on
a groundout by Derek Norman. Frankey then reached base on an error, stole second,
and came around for the second run on a single by Sam McLain.
Furman struck again in the third, roughing up Egelton for five hits and five
runs en route to a 7-1 lead. Singles by Norman and Frankey opened the inning,
and McLain reached on a fielders choice after Egletons throw to
third base failed to beat Norman. Case Cassedy followed with a bases clearing
double down the left field line to make it 5-1. Two outs later A.J. Daviduik
plated Cassedy with a single to right field line. Cassedy then advanced to second
on a passed ball and to third on an error before being driven home on a single
by Andrew Greene to complete the five-run rally.
The Paladins blew the game open with a seven-run fourth, batting around with
seven hits against Bulldog reliever Matt Covington. The big damage was inflicted
by Frankey, who doubled twice and drove in two runs in the frame in helping
the Paladins extend their lead to 14-1.
The Citadels Jason Randalls three-run home run in the seventh highlighted
the Bulldogs 15-hit attack.
Furman and The Citadel play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
