Furman Defeats Xavier 9-6

Greenville, S.C.--Cole Hubka went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run to lead Furman to a 9-6 victory over Xavier Sunday afternoon at Furman Baseball Stadium.

With the win, Furman moves to 4-5 on the year while Xavier falls to 2-2.

Furman fell behind early when Matt Tedford singled to left field to drive in Jay Johnson and Eric Greenwell to give Xavier a 2-0 advantage. Tedford later drove in another run in the fifth after he reached on a fielderıs choice, scoring Johnson for the second time in the game.

The Paladins got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Drew Latora's sacrifice fly plated Cole Hubka to cut Xavierıs lead to 3-1. In the sixth inning, Furman tied the game after Richie Dean singled off Musketeer starter Jarret Sues (0-1), driving in Brett Henninger and Brandon Barrett.

Furman broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring four runs on five hits and one error. Dominic Frankey and Brandon Barrett both plated one run each, while Cole Hubka singled in two runs to give the Paladins a 7-3 lead.

Xavier stormed back in the eight inning when Eric Armstrong singled to drive in Lucas Dines. Eric Greenwell followed with a single to left field, scoring Alec Moss and Armstrong to shave Furmanıs lead to 7-6.

The Paladins, however, pulled away in the bottom of the eighth inning after the Musketeer's gave up two hits and committed two errors, allowing Furman to score two runs.

For Furman, Danny Rueckel (1-1) scattered five hits and three runs over seven innings of work, while striking out three.

Xavier travels to Austin Peay next weekend for a three game series, which starts with a doubleheader on Saturday. Furman takes the next week off due to exams, and returns to action on February 27 when they travel to Coastal Carolina. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
