FURMAN DEFEATS XAVIER 6-1 BEHIND COMPLETE GAME FROM COREY ETHERIDGE

Greenville S.C.-- Furman starter Corey Etheridge tossed a complete game allowing only five hits and one run as the Paladins defeated Xavier 6-1 Saturday afternoon at Furman Baseball Stadium.

With the win, Furman improves to 3-5 on the season, while Xavier falls to 2-1.

Xavier took the lead early in the game after Eric Armstrong led off the second with a single later scoring on a Kevin McKnight groundout.

The Paladins came right back in the bottom of the second when Craig Caudill singled with the bases loaded, driving in Brandon Barrett. Furman, however, was prevented from scoring any more runs after Cole Hubka was thrown out at the plate by rightfielder Jarret Sues on the same play.

Furman's Dominic Frankey gave the Paladins a 3-1 lead in the third when he homered to left field off Xavier starter Kevin Crowley (0-1) with Drew Latora on base. Danny Rueckel and Frankey later singled in the fifth, driving in one run each to make the score 5-1.

Etheridge (1-1) mastered the Musketeers over the final six innings, giving up only three hits and allowing only one runner past second.

On the day, Derek Norman went 4-for-5 with a run scored and Frankey went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Paladins offensively.

Furman pounded out 15 hits compared to the Musketeeršs five, but stranded 14 runners on base.

The two teams conclude the three game series on Sunday at Furman Baseball Stadium. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
