FURMAN SWEEPS SOCON DOUBLEHEADER FROM VMI BASEBALL, 12-0, 9-6

LEXINGTON,Va. -- Furman's Dominic Frankey went 3-for-4 with 6 RBI in game one including a grand slam, while Derek Norman went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI in game two, to help Furman sweep the doubleheader over VMI, 12-0, 9-6 this afternoon at Patchin Field.

In game one, Furman (12-19, 5-9 SoCon) broke a 0-0 tie with six runs in the third inning, highlighted by Frankey's grand slam to left field. Leading 8-0, in the sixth, the Paladins would tack on four more runs to extend its lead to 10-0. The inning was capped off by a two-run double by Frankey to right center.

Tom Mastny (3-3) picked up the complete game shutout allowing only three hits, while striking out five.

In the night cap, VMI (8-20, 0-10 SoCon) got on the board first scoring twice in the first inning highlighted by a RBI single to right field by Elliott Erbe.

After a two-run single by Cole Hubka, which help spark a four run third inning, the Paladins would add on another in the fourth, courtesy of a home run to center field by Norman.

VMI would score once in the fourth, courtesy of an RBI double by Jason Annis and once in the fifth, courtesy of a home run to right by Erbe which helped narrow the Paladin lead to 5-4.

However, Furman would put the game out of reach in the ninth, scoring four times. The inning was fueled by an RBI double by Norman and a RBI single by Drew Latora.

Annis, along with Erbe, Ben Rand and Matt Cage had two hits each for VMI in game two.

Corey Etheridge (2-6) picked up the win for Furman, while Josh Owens (0-1), who came in the game in the first after an injury by starter Duke Acors, picked up the loss.

The final game of the three-game SoCon series, will take place Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Patchin Field.
