Furman Baseball Sports Two Top Draft Prospects In The Southern Conference

Greenville, S.C.--Junior right-handed pitcher Tom Mastny and sophomore third baseman/catcher Derek Norman have been ratedtwo of the ttop five draft prospects in the Southern Conference, according to Baseball America Magazine.

Mastny, a 6-foot-5, 210 pound product of Zionsville, Ind., was listed as the number four prospect in the conference. During his sophomore campaign, he posted an 8-5 record with a 4.35 ERA while picking up wins against nationally fifth ranked South Carolina and eventual Southern Conference tournament champion The Citadel.

Norman, the number five prospect in the conference, batted .362 with 42 RBI and five home runs, which helped him secure 2001 Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Year honors.

Georiga Southern pitchers Dennis Dove and Scott Tolbert were named the number one and number three prospects respectively, while The Citadelšs Eric Talbert is considered the number two prospect.

Furman opens the 2002 baseball season this Saturday against High Point in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
