CINCINNATI WALKS BY FURMAN 6-5

Greenville, S.C.--Rob Purvis gave up a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth to allow Brad Schutz to score the winning run as Cincinnati beat Furman 6-5 Sunday afternoon at Furman Baseball Stadium.

Furman got on the board early as Ryan Presnell plated Clint Hill with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Drew Latora followed with a double down the left field line to drive in Craig Caudill, giving the Paladins a 2-0 lead.

The Bearcats struck in the fourth when Aaron Moll hit a home run off Furman starter Danny Rueckel. However, the Paladins came right back in the bottom of the fourth when Cole Hubka homered to left field with Nick Wadja on base, giving the Paladins a 5-1 advantage.

Brad Schutz answered with a home run in the fifth inning scoring Erik Eitel to cut the lead to 5-3. The Bearcats would tie the game in the eighth inning when Jake Smith singled to left field off reliever Jeff Stovall (1-1), driving in Brad Dorrmann.

Cincinnati chased Stovall after he gave up three hits to open the ninth. Furman closer Rob Purvis took over with the bases loaded and gave up Mollšs game winning walk.

For Cincinnati, Kyle Markle (1-0) scattered five hits and two runs over 7 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win.

Schutz finished the day going 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. For Furman, Cole Hubka led the Paladins, offensively going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored

With the win, Cincinnati improves to 2-1 on the season, while Furman drops to 2-4. Cincinnati returns to action next on Friday when they travel to Durham, N.C. to take on Duke. The Paladins take the field next Friday, as well, when Xavier comes to Greenville for a three game series. The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
