FURMAN TOPS APPALACHIAN STATE 6-3 IN SUNDAY AFTERNOON BASEBALL ACTION

Greenville, S.C.-- Furman starter Danny Rueckel gave up one run and had ten strikeouts over eight innings of work to lead the Paladins in a 6-3 victory over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at Furman Baseball Stadium.

Furman (8-9, 2-1 SoCon) took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after Brandon Barrett scored on a Cole Hubka single. The Paladins extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning as Derek Norman singled in Craig Caudill, who earlier reached on a double. Furman later added a run in the fourth inning on a Ryan Presnell home run to left field to take a 3-0 advantage.

Appalachian State (3-9, 1-2 SoCon) answered in the top of the fifth when Brooks Haislp scored on a Ty Rachette sacrifice fly to cut the Paladin lead to 3-1. Furman, however, came back in the bottom of the fifth after Craig Caudill singled off Mountaineer starter Kyle Shiplett (1-4) to drive in Clint Hill. Derek Norman followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Caudill to push the Paladins' lead to 5-1.

Danny Rueckel (3-2) held the Appalachian State scoreless over the next three innings before being relieved by Rob Purvis in the ninth, who gave up two runs before shutting down the Mountaineers.

Appalachian State takes the field against Florida State on Tuesday in a 6:00 p.m. game. Furman travels to Atlanta on Tuesday to take on Georgia State. The first pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
