TOM MASTNY NAMED SOUTHERN CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Asheville, N.C. -- The Southern Conference today named Furman's Tom Mastny as its Pitcher of the Week.This was the second time this year Mastny has been recognized by the conference for his performance on the mound.

Mastny, a 6-5, 210-pound junior from Zionsville, Ind., tied a career high on May 4 with ten strikeouts in a 5-0 win over The Citadel. Mastny shutout the league-leading Bulldogs, scattering five hits while walking one. On the season, Mastny is 5-5 with a 3.93 ERA. He has fanned 69 hitters in 84.2 innings pitched.

Also receiving strong consideration for Pitcher of the Week was another Furman pitcher, Jeff Stovall, who also shutout The Citadel, 5-0, in the rubber game on the series while throwing a three-hitter.

For Player of the Week, third baseman Derek Norman who posted a .417 average with four RBI last week received strong consideration, but the honor went to Western Carolinašs Donovan Minero.

Furman plays a midweek game against High Point on Wednesday at Alumni Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Paladins then take on UNC Greensboro in a key three-game Southern Conference series, which begins on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
