MADERER'S TWO HOME RUNS POWER
FURMAN
PAST HIGH POINT 7-2, PALADINS COMPLETE SWEEP
GREENVILLE -- Justin Maderer belted two home runs and drove in three runs to
lead Furman to a 7-2 win and three-game series sweep over visiting High Point
in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Furman Stadium.
With Furman trailing 2-1 in the
bottom of the fifth inning, Maderer homered over the left field fence off Panther
starter Rusty Bodenheimer to tie the game at 2-2. An inning later, after Furman
had taken a 4-2 lead on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Cole Hubka and Kyle
Snipes, Maderer delivered his second home run of the game ‹ a two-out, two-run
shot to left ‹ to up the Paladin lead to 6-2.
A Danny Rueckel sacrifice fly in
the bottom of the eighth made it 7-2.
Furman's Tom Mastny allowed only one earned run and scattered six hits over
five innings. Sophomore Jon Stallsmith (1-0) threw three innings of one-hit
relief to pick up the win. Bodenheimer took the loss afer surrendering seven
hits and five earned runs in five and 2/3 innings of work.
Furman's Adam Etherington gave the Paladins a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
first with a lead off home run. Freshman Dominic Frankey, meanwhile, contributed
to Furman's 12-hit attack by going 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Paladins also
stole four bases in five attempts in the contest.
Now 3-0 on the season, Furman returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts UNC Charlotte in a 3:00 p.m. game at Furman Stadium. High Point, which falls to 1-3 on the year, plays Wofford in Spartanburg on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
